President’s Message

Dave Potter, CMCA, AMS Golden Rain Foundation – Seal Beach Chapter President

As I’m writing this, the year is a little more than half over. But, as you’re reading this, we’re in the home stretch for 2025. The chapter is already at work planning for 2026, and we’ve just finished off the Fourth of July! I hope everyone had a chance to hear the 2025 CAI National President Melissa Ramsey, CMCA, AMS, LSM, PCAM of Mosaic Community Consulting at our Symposium in August; the incoming CAI National President is Southern California’s very own Matt Ober, Esq. When you see him at an event, please be sure to introduce yourself and thank him for his work and leadership in our industry.

There is still much to do in 2025 for our chapter! Our Bowling Tournament, the Battle of the Lanes, is back on September 30th

. October 9th is our educational

luncheon on Litigation Horror Stories (as an aside, a career goal of mine is to never have a client I work with appear in one of these presentations). And then October 15th

We’re honored to host a PCAM Case Study for CAI on October 16th

participating in that, you already know who you are. October 20th

is our Board Leader Certification Program for homeowner leaders. ; if you’re

I hope many of you will take the day to enjoy fun and fellowship before autumn is in full effect. Our November 5th

is our annual Golf Tournament, which is always a popular event, and luncheon will provide the annual legislative

update with CLAC Advocate Louis Brown, typically a highly attended luncheon. (As another aside, I hope someone can take notes for me at that luncheon. I will miss it because I’m getting married that week.) And finally, October 29th is our annual PCAM Reception, where we honor those chapter members who have achieved the prestigious Professional Community Association Manager designation over the last twelve months.

Max Lucado once said about leadership: “A man who wants to lead the orchestra must turn his back on the crowd.” This quote always resonates for me from my time in high school orchestra, and the simplicity of its point is profound. Leaders face pressure from the crowd, whether it’s subordinates, community members, or even peers, to take certain actions. But the responsibility of leadership compels the individual to evaluate if that action truly is the best one for the group. Managers take actions that their team wants; leaders take action that their team needs. And sometimes, those actions are not what they want. This is a hard lesson to learn but critical for those of us who are leading a community that often needs an unpopular choice to be made.

As I said, we’re in the home stretch for 2025, so enjoy these moments and start thinking about what you want from 2026. It will be here before you know it.
