President’s Message

Dave Potter, CMCA, AMS Golden Rain Foundation – Seal Beach Chapter President

Summer is here! It’s hard to believe that 2025 is already halfway done.

The best part about this time of year is that Chapter activities are not just limited to indoors. There are great opportunities to get out, socialize with your fellow members, and support the California Legislative Action Committee (CLAC), which works to influence community association legislation in Sacramento.

The Chapter will hold its annual Concert for CLAC at Cook’s Corner July 31st, with proceeds used to support advocacy efforts in the State. Admission is a simple $20, there’s food and drink for sale, and great music all evening from The Reflexx, one of the County’s premier 80s cover bands. This event has been so successful that other chapters in the state are following Orange County’s lead.

If you still prefer indoor events for your fun, June 5th there is the annual Chapter Comedy Night at the Irvine Improv! This is one of my personal favorite evenings, and a portion of the night’s proceeds will go to CLAC as well.

Our upcoming June 17th luncheon is titled “Taking on Bullies and Harassment in Your Community.” Unfortunately, a rising trend in our industry is an increasingly hostile tone from community members.

The July 10th luncheon will be our annual game show event, which attendees greatly enjoy. Be sure to come for the fun and the continuing education credits.

Recently, to celebrate my birthday, my friends took me to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, in Simi Valley, California. There, I was reminded of a member of the former President’s leadership team I admire, former Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Colin Powell. One of his great quotes that I keep coming back to is: “Great leaders are almost always great simplifiers, who can cut through argument, debate, and doubt to offer a solution everybody can understand.”

This quote resonates with me because it gets to the heart of what an effective community manager does. It’s important to listen to our boards, our community members, and our vendors to build the necessary consensus to move forward on the big issues that may be confronting a community. The more time I’ve spent in CAI, the more I’ve realized this applies to all of the stakeholders in our communities.

Being a leader, whatever your specific role may be, starts with recognizing the value in listening to hear and understand instead of to respond. From that comes an effectiveness in the power of clarity of communication and decisiveness of your leadership, which can inspire and motivate people. This is the impact I hope to have on my boards and business partners; I am inspired and motivated by my time with you.
