Build California Making a Difference
Andrew Biggs Biggs was happy to invite Perez for
an interview, appreciating the vetting that Build California has already done before they try to connect prospective employees with employers like ISEC. “When they asked if I would be willing to give him a chance with an interview I said, ‘Absolutely.’ Tey had already gone through the interview process for me. And I’m always willing to give somebody a second chance.” Biggs was impressed with the initiative
and drive he saw in Perez, his willingness to learn and better his life, his affable na- ture, accountability for his past mistakes and his determination to make a better life for himself and his family. He also liked the fact that he had completed the ARC program. “His making the time and effort to go through this program kind of checked the first box,” he said. After another interview between Perez and one of ISEC’s general superinten- dents, ISEC hired him as apprentice carpenter this February. He is currently working on a 37-story high-rise project in Century City. For Perez, just three weeks on the job when we talked with him in early March, the hands-on position at ISEC is a life-changer. Today, he is full of hope for the future.

“Life is about second chances. We all make mistakes, but they definitely don’t define you. If anything they refine you and you come out a better person. Don’t let those challenges beat you up, instead move forward; persevere.” – Frank Perez
“It has truly been life-changing, and I
love it,” he said. “I never knew a construc- tion career gave you this much liberty and fulfillment.” Perez said he is grateful to Build Cal- ifornia to be the connector to his new career. “Tat was the game changer that got me the phone call and the foot in the door,” he noted. Recently, he took steps to become a Build California Ambassador,
something he sees as a way to give back and encourage others to consider careers in construction.
“Life is about second chances. We all
make mistakes, but they definitely don’t define you,” he pointed out. “If anything they refine you and you come out a better person. Don’t let those challenges beat you up, instead move forward; perse- vere.”
