The San T1 project piloted an electric excavator for an earth movement/ foundation scope.

Te project piloted an electric exca-

vator during an earth movement and foundation scope self-performed by Turner’s JV partner, Flatiron. And begin- ning this summer, the JV contractor will begin an estimated seven-month pilot of a fully electric generator that will be used in lieu of traditional diesel generators on the terrazzo flooring contract. Te electric generator will power a fleet of surface preparation equipment that will be used to install the terrazzo flooring throughout the approximately mile-long new terminal building. Turner-Flatiron JV partnered with

Sunbelt Rentals to develop the inno- vative power generation solution for the terrazzo work. The original plan called for two 250kw diesel genera- tors powering the fleet of equipment over 10-hour shifts spanning seven months. By switching to the electric power solution, Sunbelt estimates the project will save over 31,000 lbs. of CO2

from being emitted into the San Diego air and will avoid the need to purchase an estimated 1,410 gallons of diesel fuel each workweek. While there are upfront premiums

associated with the rental of electric and hybrid powered batteries due to their relative newness in the construction market, that cost is offset by the fuel savings and other benefits, according to Butler. “If you are making a positive environmental impact and the cost is about the same after you take fuel savings into account, it is kind of a no-brainer,” he commented. And there are many other benefits as well, including the quiet, odorless, gasless nature of the electric genera- tor, which positively impacts workers’ health as well as benefitting residents in the nearby community. Currently at peak construction, an estimated 1,500 workers are present on the SAN T1 project site each day.

Mark Wilton, director, Sustainable En-

ergy - Power & HVAC Services at Sunbelt Rentals, Inc., noted that the company’s fleet of Battery Energy Storage Solutions (BESS) such as that to be used on the San T1 project has grown to almost 1,800 units nationwide since first being introduced into the U.S. market just a few years ago. “From simply running a job-site trailer

generator more efficiently, to supporting EV and electrified equipment charging, to bringing the power supply closer to work being done, BESS offer clean, silent, and dependable power supply (either supple- menting utility power or, providing it where there is none available yet),” he said. “Using BESS in hybrid mode with a generator or, standalone as an energy source, job sites benefit from optimal load management, less service and fueling trucks in the way, and reduce diesel consumption. Te market is evolving as more folks who are doing the work engage and trust solutions that are different from traditional mindset.”
