Swinerton Delivering Transformative Affordable Housing Project in San Francisco

long San Francisco’s Central Waterfront in Potrero Hill’s Dogpatch neighborhood, crews
from Swinerton and its trade partners are transforming the first section of a former industrial site that was home to the City’s last fossil fuel burning power plant into a vibrant new affordable workforce housing complex. Te Potrero Power Station Block 7B/
Sophie Maxwell Building project is note- worthy on multiple fronts, not the least of which is the positive impact it will have on the local community. Tat impact extends not only to residents of the historically underserved Southeastern sector of San Francisco who have lived or worked near

the polluting Potrero Power Plant since it was built in the mid-1960s, but also to the local workforce that stands to benefit from an increase in newly available affordable housing units created by this project. Te new building’s namesake – com-
munity activist and former San Francisco supervisor Sophie Maxwell – spent years working alongside environmental, social justice and sustainability groups to get the city to shutter the power plant. Although it supplied a large amount of power to the city, the plant was also a significant source of pollution. Many area residents reportedly suffered from disproportion- ately high rates of health issues that they attributed to the plant.
