ASSOCIATION • Association BUZZ From the Desk of the President Greg Chiecko, OABA President

In 2024 we continue to increase the partnership between the IAFE and the OABA. Since the Covid era, the

cooperation between our two organizations has resulted in many positive accomplishments, and we look forward to maintaining this interaction into the future. Among several interactions was the “Critical Conversation”

tool kit that was developed last year as a guide to better communications between fairs and carnivals. I know people are using it and it’s a great way to have meaningful conversations with your partner. While it encompasses several timely topics, it is designed to add subject matter as situations change in our evolving world. Perhaps the most important area that the IAFE and OABA

have collaborated on is in the federal governmental front. Our quest to obtain 100 co-sponsors for HR 1787, the CARE Act, has been greatly enhanced by our fairs advocating on our behalf. At the time of this writing, we are at 70 co-sponsors. We had IAFE leadership and several fairs represented at our  participants at the event. It is amazing how effective it is when the fairs tell their story and the importance of the carnival to

In 2024, we have made a major change to our board meeting schedule. For as long as most can remember, OABA has held its board meeting in conjunction with the IAAPA trade show in Orlando, Florida. Starting this year our board will meet during the IAFE Convention and will travel from city to city as it moves across the country. It just makes sense to be with   Board meeting. Once again, this formal interaction between OABA and IAFE members will open communication further. This will be a great forum to discuss some of the challenges we all face in our business today. On Tuesday at 10:30am, OABA will present the workshop,

“The Conversation Continues – Active Shooter Coordination – using the VOLT platform to train employees, Federal update and the importance of using the Circle of Excellence program.” Socially, OABA will be sponsoring the DJ at the opening street party and will have our trade show booth near registration. We invite all to stop by for a chat or to pick up some information. Finally, we wish Marla Calico the very best in her retirement. Marla has supported fairs and carnivals as the IAFE’s Chief Executive and for many years as a member of the fair industry. Her dedication to the members and staff is second to none. She has tirelessly advocated on behalf of the industry and to make all our industry propel forward together. On a personal level, Marla has been a long-time friend and has always been willing to help. Once again, we wish her the best in the new chapter of her life. We look forward to seeing many of you at the IAFE

Convention in Phoenix. Have a great Thanksgiving and stay safe. Greg
