Ok so now let’s talk about the equipment for a moment.
As we are doing our annual inspections of rides and devices around the country, we see all sorts of potential issues that we point out to the management or maintenance personnel, and we try to use this as a training opportunity as well while performing our duties as the third-party inspector. Several rides have annual requirements such as performing Non- destructive testing per the manufacturer or a state require- ment. Some ride manufacturers require annual replacement of the structural fasteners, it is the duty of the maintenance staff or the management of the company to make sure these things are done and documented as well. You see that thing called Documentation we just can’t seem to get away from it. Does your company have the manuals for the rides and de-
vices available for the employees to read and get familiar with the required maintenance or the inspection areas that might be called out in the manual? This is part of training the employees by providing them with all the materials to properly perform their duties. This is an area that I have a bit of an interest in as I have recently purchased
RIDEBOOKS.COM, a subscription based reference service that has numerous manuals, bulletins and notices about rides and devices. As an OABA member ben- efit there is a special discounted price available to OABA mem- bers. I encourage you to at least go to the website and watch a quick tutorial on it and that is all I have to say about that.
When there is an incident the first thing that is asked for after
the event is for the training documentation of the operator and the daily inspections and the maintenance records. We don’t think anything will ever happen and thankfully the amusement industry is inherently safe, but we must be prepared. If you’re in a position to make a difference at your company or amuse- ment park or even at your Fair itself, please have the conversa- tion about training and documentation with whoever you can. Every year there is an incident that makes national news that reflects upon our entire industry, and we try and do our small part to reduce the potential of having something happen to put us in the public’s eye in a negative way. I’m a proud member of the OABA and have been for as long as I can remember, and I do everything I can to promote safety cultures at companies that we are honored to have as clients as well as at safety seminars that I volunteer at to help educate people about Safety in the amusement business. I hope that you have gained one piece of information from
this short article on safety and can help make our industry safer and better every day. Remember, “Our World Revolves Around Safety!”
