Siding Price Factors

Siding prices are calculated based on a few different metrics: ` Size of your home/condominium – more square footage means more siding which means the more it will cost.

` Type of siding – choosing a lower cost vinyl siding will cost significantly less than having a mason come and brick the exterior of the building.

` The architectural details – a plain, rectangular building will cost less than a building with gables, multiple corners, and other interesting (but expensive) features.

` The cost of local labor – it can be much higher in metropolitan areas.

` Removal/disposal of old siding. Disposal fees can be high.

Protect Your Investment

As with many building materials, those with higher initial costs, such as stucco and fiber-cement, have the greatest durability. Per year of expected life, the costs of wood and vinyl are roughly equivalent (excluding maintenance costs). Fiber-cement board’s cost per year of expected life tends to be significantly less than other options.

Leaks are most likely to manifest at critical junctures in the building assembly: at corners, or penetrations (windows, vents, etc.), or where two dissimilar materials meet. These are not always the easiest locations for homeowners to monitor.

Water damage can be a slow and insidious process, often underway long before a resident becomes aware of the issue.

Water damage can be a slow and insidious process, often underway long before a resident becomes aware of the issue. Regular inspections and maintenance are critical to assessing these vulnerabilities, protecting them, and identifying failures early.
