Chapter News

of comfort into our workplaces and communities we strengthen and stabilize as a group. Inclusion is about seeking and validating authenticity. People do not want to feel they need to change or hide to be part of a group. Embracing everyone’s individual strengths and experiences leads to mutual benefit and development. Inclusion is empowerment.

Everyone wants to feel heard and experience a sense of belonging, and by inviting that type of comfort into our workplaces and communities we strengthen and stabilize as a group.

DEI is so much more than a corporate initiative or a policy to attract more diversity or range. It’s much more than that because it’s about people, not statistics or the bottom line. The community association industry is at the center of nearly every community. Our impact on inclusive engagement is huge, the availability to connect with diverse groups is abundant, and our voices can be amplified to open more equitable discussions.

Eager to begin efforts to incorporate DEI into your daily life? Be curious and courteous as you begin. Consider reflecting on what you want to gain from the experience. ` Perhaps it’s having a deeper connection with your neighbors within your association. Take time to meet neighbors, learn their stories and experiences. Often people will have more to contribute to community living concepts and building projects than we’d expect.

` Maybe you’re interested in engaging with more minority- owned businesses. Break free of your comfort zone at an industry event, network, and discuss upcoming projects with Business Partners you’ve not worked with before. Ask about their experiences as a professional and in the industry.

` It may be that you’re seeking to discover new ideas and policy change from your team or community members. Be certain to seek feedback at every level and develop a platform for inclusive conversations. Extend the invitation to people by seeking to understand how they would manage an issue or process.
