TD: I’m incredibly proud to have taken the enormous leap to start my own firm. Anyone who has started a business can attest to the fear and worry that accompanies making that decision. My experience was consistent with that theme, and it has been the best decision I could’ve made for my career. Finding ways to stand out, grow the firm, continue to learn as a professional and have balance in my life has been rewarding. I feel I’m making an impact on my clients’ small businesses and in their lives by being able to guide them through some of the difficult decisions that come with business ownership.

OSCPA: How are you creating an impact on the community and CPA profession?

TD: I hope I’m setting an example and creating a path for future young women and entrepreneurs to build their own legacy. I am very passionate about empowering women in life and business. I believe in the power women have in families and corporations. I work hard to equip women with the tools and strategy they need to provide for their future. I’ve also had several colleagues and peers reach out to me for advice on starting their own firm,

and I love the opportunity to share any institutional knowledge I have picked up through my experiences. Collaborating, learning and sharing with other professionals will always be one of my favorite aspects of this career. When I first started my career, there was a big emphasis on competition. I genuinely do not think CPAs benefit from this mentality. I have no incentive to gatekeep when we are better and stronger together, supporting and learning from each other.

OSCPA: Where do you see your career in five years? What’s next on your list of accomplishments?

TD: Tose who know me personally can attest that I’m a planner. Over the past decade or so, I have made countless five-year plans for every aspect of my life. Not one of them has come to fruition, not for a lack of trying. What has resulted in the unplanned is far better than anything I have ever planned for. I have learned that being flexible and experiencing life in the little moments is more rewarding than constantly trying to plan for it. However, having something to work toward always keeps me motivated to move forward even if I know the end results may vary. One of the things keeping me moving forward is my hope that the firm continues to grow.
