FOCUS THE OSCPA TRAILBLAZER AND PATHFINDER AWARDS
HOLLY LIU, CPA, might be a new CPA, but she is no stranger to the CPA profession. With two CPA parents, she is a legacy of the profession. She has begun a legacy of her own as a CPA by helping promote the profession to others who are needing guidance finding their career path. Find out more about what motivates her to create an impact.
OSCPA: Describe your greatest achievement in your community and profession. HL: Growing up, I wanted to be a superhero that saves people from crisis and chaos. When my client said,” Tank you so much for rebuilding my finances and keeping my business safe from falling apart,” I knew even though I didn’t have my cape, I had my 10-key. Being in public accounting is not just having a job, it is an opportunity to serve the community. It is a bond to connect local business owners to help one another. As CPAs, we are required to have continuing education to keep us up to date with new policies and regulations, which also offers great knowledge to help our clients seize opportunities.
OSCPA: How are you creating an impact on the community and CPA profession? HL: I am from a household of CPAs. Both of my parents, my husband and I are all CPAs. When young kids ask us questions like “Why did we chose to be a CPA?” or “Why did we choose to be an accountant?” we always respond to them with passion, and some of them end up switching to accounting majors. I believe accounting is a profession that can help every industry and every business. We can read between numbers and help entrepreneurs make investment decisions. I would love to promote being a CPA to all accountants and potential future CPAs.
OSCPA: What motivated you to get involved? HL: I am a member of the OSCPA’s Young Accounting Professionals (YAP) Committee and Accounting Careers Committee. Besides participating in the committee meetings and normal committee member duties, I volunteer my time to participate at the New CPA Ceremony and university visits to promote the OSCPA to college students and new CPAs. I encourage all of my colleagues to participate in OSCPA social events like the Mix and Mingles. A lot of them are now associate members of the OSCPA. I believe we can be stronger and better business advisers by caring for each other and getting involved in state and national organizations.
OSCPA: Where do you see your career in five years? What’s next on your list of accomplishments? HL: I hope I can always humbly serve my clients and my community. Great acts are made up of small deeds. Little by little, those small deeds become a lot. Our community is going to be a better place every day.
