SEDATION Rule Changes

The MDA continues to receive inqui- ries about the recent Missouri Dental Board rule changes regarding seda- tion. We are in the process of devel- oping communications that will be of assistance to members. We will share those as soon as they are complete, through both eNews and the Focus.

House of Delegates

Scheduling, planning and connecting for the future

by VICKI WILBERS  MDA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR W

coming up soon The MDA invites all members to attend the annual MDA House of Delegates, November 8-9, 2013 in Jefferson City. Each year resolutions are introduced that have been submit- ted by an MDA House Committee (such as Rules and Order), the MDA Board, local component societies or an individual delegate. The House is a forum for delegates from each compo- nent society to hear and debate each resolution, amend if desired, and vote on its passage or defeat. In addition to voting on resolutions, the annual House meeting is where the Associa- tion’s officers are elected. To learn more about the House of Delegates, go to www.modental.org/house.

here did the slow season go—or does that season even exist any-

more? Although summer didn’t officially start until June 21, for my family gearing up for it began the minute school ended. For us it means we will be busy with an exhaustive list of activities which will take us throughout Missouri and to surrounding states for softball, basketball and baseball. This year it has brought an entire differ- ent meaning with having a son entering his last year of high school and a daughter entering her freshmen year. Involvement in sports, college planning, orientations and more put a tremendous amount of demand on their schedules and mine, so priorities become really important in order to narrow down focus. As their parent, I see my job as leading them to identify what focus, now, is beneficial for their future.

At the MDA, we are really no different when it comes to demand on schedules. The MDA is at no loss for the exhaustive list of activi- ties which it undertakes. It becomes impera- tive for any organization to put priorities in place. In the association world, that means strategic planning. The MDA’s strategic plan has about a three-year life span, and as such, is due for an upgrade in 2014.

Not only does the MDA manage projects related specifically to our membership but as well, we provide staffing, support and input into direction for multiple subsidiaries, including MDA and Well Being Foundations, MoDentPAC and MDIS. Therefore, the 2014 strategic planning approach will include considerations for more than just MDA. This type of forward thinking and leadership must occur on many levels for MDA and its subsidiaries to continue to achieve success for the stakeholders we all serve individually and collectively. There are a lot of moving parts all which connect in the end!

At this time leadership and strategic efforts have brought together programs such as Connect4Success which just occurred in June (see page 32). The desire to have a program of this nature formed from both a House resolution and strategic thinking on the need to involve and engage new dentists and component leadership for growth—growth in leadership, in network- ing and in organizational understanding. When we are all working to envision the same future, the growth potential is limit- less.

Also, recently formed ad hoc committees on Governance Structure and For Profit Success have brought together members to help determine what ways the association structure and offerings can be changed or enhanced to provide the most benefit for serving members.

As this issue goes to press, Paul Roberts heads to Denver to the ADA New Dentist Conference. We are especially interested in seeing the workings of this event, as it will come to Kansas City in July 2014 (see page 34) and will need our support—as the host state—to make it a success. The follow- ing week, he, Patrick and I will attend the always insightful ADA Management Confer- ence. These and various other events will roll us back into the start of school days and the transfer of busy summer schedules to busy fall schedules! This means I’ll see many of you at component events, at ADA Annual Session and at our House of Delegates, to name a few. I’ll look forward to those visits as we continue to look to our future … to determine what we can do of benefit for our members and find ways we can continue to “connect for success” with each other in this association. f
