Have a dilemma? New ADA hotline helps address ethics

T

he hotline, while it doesn’t provide legal guidance, is an easy, confidential way for ADA members to get some advice on next steps when navigating an ethical dilemma.

To access, call the ADA at 800-621-8099 and request the ethics ho- tline. After confirming your membership, you’ll be asked to provide some information about the issue(s), and you’ll receive a call back from a member of the ADA Council on Ethics, Bylaws and Judicial Affairs. This dentist will then discuss the application of the ADA Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct to the specific situation.

The goal is for the member to receive a response within two or three days. However, if a member requests a rapid response, volunteers and staff will work to make that happen. Dentists who use the ethics hotline will need to provide their ADA member number, but details of their cases will be kept in strict confidence.

On June 3 the American Academy of Pedi- atrics hosted a free webinar “Working Together to Promote Oral Health Care for Pregnant Women” to discuss the importance of collaboration among health professionals to ensure that the oral health needs of pregnant women are met. An archive of the webinar is available online, along with the slide set and a list of additional resources. Please share these resources with other healthcare providers in your community!

NEW RESOURCE ON TREATING OBESITY //

The Obesity Action Coalition and the American College of Physicians have a new free resource for health care profes- sionals who treat ex- cess weight and obesity. “Excess Weight and Your Health—A Guide to Effective, Healthy Weight Loss” is a 32-page guide- book and DVD that offers health care professionals a mechanism to introduce the topic of weight into their practices.

“Dentists are very cognizant of overall health and how it relates to the treat- ment they provide. Diseases like dia- betes have a deleterious effect on oral health and link directly to obesity,” said Dr. John Fisher, a member of the ADA Council on Access, Prevention and Interprofessional Relations. “Many dental offices may be interested in using this resource to help their patients un- derstand how their weight affects their oral and overall health.”

The DVD features two experts in the field of obesity discussing real patients who have battled, and continue to battle, excess weight and obesity.
