The Legal Forum was an all-day event that began with a panel of attorneys who answered questions while the participants ate breakfast. Eight different legal sessions were available for the 215 attendees to choose from. There were two breakout sessions before lunch and two more breakout sessions after lunch. The topics discussed included overcoming current association issues, strategically collecting assessments, common missteps in responding to requests for support animals, and covenant and rule enforcement. Participants learned about the cases of Boucher and First Amendment rights, the new Cook County Assessor and what this could mean for the industry, the Palm II court case, and how to avoid the unauthorized practice of law. The Legal Forum was concluded with a Happy Hour open to all members.

Lobby Day was extraordinary, thanks to the generous donations of our members! Sixteen members of CAI- Illinois went to Springfield and met with over twenty legislators. These CAI representatives testified on CAI- ILAC’s behalf regarding Chairman Thapedi’s Condo Bill HB 50. This was a subject matter hearing where the group was able to present community association positions, and offered assistance to the Chairman and the Committee to reach an agreement. The CAM Licensing Act is set to sunset at the end of 2019 and CAI-ILAC pledged its support in introducing a new bill to determine a course of action. After a few more meetings, one of which involved the State Emergency Management Act and specifically, debris or wreckage from a declared emergency, the group moved to the Capitol and met with legislators outside the House & Senate Chambers, discussing keys issues of the CAI bills- of-the-day. CAI-ILAC also hosted a dinner with Senator John Mulroe, Senator Paul Schimpf, Representative Kelly Burke, Representative Andre Thapedi and Representative Stephanie Kifowit.
