Board members will most likely have their own personal opinions regarding marijuana which could lead to bias and conflict when making a decision to allow it or not. If smoking marijuana were to be approved by the association, residents would need to be courteous to their neighbors as it is a community living situation. Users may need to comply with a similar type of regulations currently in place regarding cigarette-smoking. Violations of such may be considered a nuisance in the same manner as cigarette smoking may be, with similar warnings and consequences. But how do you regulate the residents? An information card on file in the office with supporting documentation? Do you impose smoking hours or a designated location?
It would be prudent to be proactive and begin the education process on marijuana and provide some helpful tips on how to co-exist. Users would need to be respectful of their neighbors who do not. Air purifiers work wonders to improve circulation, while door drags or towels reduce drifting of smoke into common areas.
The marijuana debate is reminiscent of the early twentieth century where alcohol was banned during prohibition, and the morality of alcohol consumers was heavily judged. Now in this century, the topic of marijuana usage has slowly made its way into the courtroom, mainstream and even board meetings as an incendiary topic. As culture shifts and changes, associations find themselves having to modify to address topics not considered before. It’s a whole new world!
