for skaters to join compulsory and small ensemble groups. For most skaters, if they are going to compete in a big event they want to make it worth their while, so we try to create as many opportunities for them as possible to do events individually and with friends.
“Also, our skaters made so many
friends from all over the country and world! Tey now look forward to going to some of these other events to see the new friends they made from other facilities. Participating in national competitions grows your skating community beyond your club and rink and builds lasting friendships with people they may have never otherwise met.
“Our community also gets involved
in volunteering, and therefore growing the knowledge of and involvement in our sport. Tis past summer, we had over 500

volunteer positions and received help from all over our community, even from people who had never done anything with skating before. It was so much fun to see their first experience with the ice and to see what our sport has to offer to the community. We had quite a few local schools participate in volunteering for community service hours, and not only were students able to complete hours of service before the busy school season but they also learned so much about skating.”
REVENUE BOOST
For rink managers, the focus on an ISI event is usually fiscal. One of the biggest benefits of hosting an ISI national event is the boost in revenue,” says Grate. “We have found that on a typical weekend or week we are hosting an ISI event, we make more money in ice rentals from practice ice times and food sales as well as a boost in our programs and interest in skating.
