MIAMA FALL CONFERENCE 12 Individuals Certified as ISIU Managers
Reinforcing our commitment to make professional education accessible to industry members, we once again brought the ISI University (ISIU) program to the Minnesota Ice Arena Managers Association (MIAMA) Fall Conference, Sept. 3-6 at the beautiful Sugar Lake Lodge in Cohasset, Minn.
“We had the privilege of offering full
certification in ice arena management to both new and experienced managers of some of Minnesota’s finest facilities,” said ISIU committee member and instructor Jamie Baringer, who is athletic director of arena operations at Bowling Green State. “Te week was filled with engaged students and/or managers who desired to learn not only the material in the coursework but also through the real-life experiences of the 70 years’ combined experience of the industry professionals in attendance.”
Twelve individuals successfully
completed coursework and exams to receive the distinguished ISI Certified Arena Manager (CAM) designation. Baringer was joined by ISI Board of Directors Treasurer Kevin McCormack, vice president of arena operations at
Floyd Hall Arena, and ISI Membership Coordinator and District 10 Director Jane Schaber, skating director at the National Sports Center, to instruct classes on a variety of topics, including but not limited to:
• Te Role of the Arena Manager • Leadership and Professional Image • Front Desk Operations/Cash Inventory & Management
• Arena Scheduling • Leadership • Marketing • Financial Management • Contract Administration • Public vs. Private Management • Risk Management • Ancillary Income Sources • Event Management • Customer Service & Retention
Program attendees reported that
the ISI University course was extremely informative and that they were eager to take the information back to their facilities and implement what they had learned.
“Once again, our MIAMA colleagues
provided wonderful hospitality in a beautiful setting for an excellent ISI University experience,” said McCormack.
“We had a fun and engaged group of students who shared ideas, asked good questions and were open to new ways of operating their arenas.
“It was wonderful to see some old
friends and make some new ones. Tank you to all at MIAMA who are always so welcoming to us. MIAMA is such an excellent organization, and the attention to detail, professionalism and interesting topics presented at their conference is second to none. Tank you to all of the students in our classes as well as those who took the time to attend conference to learn, exchange ideas and network. We look forward to working with MIAMA in the future.”
MIAMA Administrative Assistant
Dean Mulso, recreation facilities manager of Burnsville Ice Center/Burnsville Skate Park, stated: “Te ISIU Certificate of Management course held at the 2019 MIAMA Fall Conference was a success. Te attendees enjoyed the course and the information that was provided, and the conversations outside of the classroom with their instructors — Jamie Baringer, Jane Schaber and Kevin McCormack — were invaluable as well.
“Overall, new students said they
garnered valuable information and the old-timers used the information to reinforce what they already knew and picked up new information as well.”
