DISTRICT AND ASSOCIATION UPDATES A big thank you to skating manager David Hicks and arena manager

Melissa Fitzgerald for hosting such a great seminar.

The district is thrilled that after many years of being dormant the new Nazareth Ice Oasis San Mateo (formerly San Mateo Ice Chalet) is open. Congratulations to Hanna Hanhan and his crew for undertaking an enormous task!

We are now back to 13 rinks in District 14 — one more would be even better! (Any takers?)

ISI DISTRICT 15

(ARIZONA, HAWAII, SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, SOUTHERN NEVADA) by Randy Winship, District Director

This year’s annual District 15 seminar was a huge success. For the first time in many years, we held a joint manager/instructor event with over 70 attendees. We were fortunate to have several guest speakers. ISI President Rob McBride and ISI Managing Director Liz Mangelsdorf discussed and explained ISI’s new rebranding efforts and what it means for all our members.

ISI District 16 Director Cindy Solberg leads an on-ice presentation at the District 15 fall seminar.

ISI DISTRICT 18 (FLORIDA)

Glyn Jones, District Director

We have all weathered Hurricane Irma. Here on the west coast of Florida, we were very lucky; we were expecting up to a 10-foot storm surge, which would have put a few rinks under water, but it turned out to be a 2-3-foot surge. A few rinks were out of commission for a number of days due to power outages; TBSA was out of power for three days but

we managed to save the ice. Clearwater Ice Arena was without power for five days and lost ice in the new rink. The Fort Myers Skatium was down for a few days as the city would not allow them to open due to the weather conditions. I know a few rinks around the state that also lost time — Miami, Daytona, Spacecoast, etc. It has cost us dearly as the storm blew in right at the start of many skating school and hockey league start-up programs for the new season.

ISI District 15 Seminar - ISI President Rob McBride and ISI Managing Director Liz Mangelsdorf discuss ISI’s new rebranding strategy.

Art Sutherland of Accent Refrigeration provided a very thorough refrigeration maintenance session, along with several great stories from his many years of experience in the industry.

Rob led a session on Energy Efficiencies within the rink and ISI 2nd Vice

President Lisa Fedick presented a session on Customer Service and Skater Retention.

ISI District 16 Director Cindy Solberg was our guest speaker for several on-ice sessions and she was joined by Teri Ballard and Tamara Smulson for presentations on specialized program choreography. Cindy and Lisa relayed their experience and perspective about how to use both ISI and U.S. Figure Skating programs to keep skaters involved in the sport longer.

All of our district rinks are making the effort to conform with the new policy of registering all students as ISI members. I think that they are realizing that the ISI is a member-driven organization and that this revenue will make a big difference to the ISI being able to continue to provide excellent programs both for skaters and rink owners and operators.

We are still working on setting a date for our ISI District 18 seminar. It is tentatively planned for January at the Ice Sports Forum in Brandon, Fla. Once confirmed, details will be announced
