MANAGEMENT REACTS POSITIVELY


After just one month, our board members sat me down in the rink’s lobby and thanked me for coming to them with my recommendations and remedies to enhance the facility. They told me that, between the cleaning of the glass and dasher boards, they had received several comments from the local skaters. The skaters had thanked them for putting resources into fixing up the facility. A board member also mentioned that our public skating numbers were up slightly.


Ten the directors told me the best news: all our current contract ice customers had agreed to renew their commitments for the following year. However, the directors said, the contract ice customers had a condition: the facility upgrades made in the previous month would continue at a reasonable, affordable and noticeable rate.

Tis was music to my ears. Te board was pleased, our facility was looking better and our customers were happy and returning.


Te board asked me what I wanted to do next and requested a written plan and a budget. “Let’s keep this thing rolling,” they said. Tey were feeling the same pride that my staff and I felt due to an improved facility.


A month later, the scenario was even


brighter. Our monthly power bill dropped almost $3,000. My staff and I had taken the time and resources the board provided and


we had lowered our ice level. Tat led to our refrigeration system not having to run as long, which translated into energy savings.


I took this information to the board and explained that, by lowering our refrigeration system’s run time, our water bill for our evaporative condenser was going to be lower and our service technicians’ visits were going to be fewer. Also, I noted that our compressors, brine pumps and motors were all going to last longer. Finally, I mentioned that our dehumidifier was going to run more
