FUNNIEST/MOST INTERESTING MOMENT ON THE JOB

“Te best day in my professional career was arriving at Rockefeller ice rink at 7:30 a.m. to confer on their failed ice rink floor, then getting the order and designing, manufacturing, delivering and installing a new rink by 7:30 a.m. the next morning.

“Te initial conversation with the customer, while looking at a rink floor that had zero ice after five days of trying to circulate 3F-fluid went something like this: RC Guy: ‘I’m screwed, aren’t I?’ Me: ‘Yup.’

Mark and his family, with the Matterhorn in background.

RC Guy: ‘Can you fix it?’ Me: ‘Yup.’ RC Guy: ‘How fast?’ Me: ‘My goal is 24 hours, but I can’t promise that.’ RC Guy: ‘Go.’ … the rest is history.”

WORDS OF WISDOM

“My father’s words of wisdom to me were: ‘If you wouldn’t want to read about it on the front page of Te New York Times tomorrow morning, don’t do it.’ I’ve always heeded that advice. I think mine would be: Nothing difficult and important gets done without setting goals and making a plan.”

FAVORITE ACTIVITIES

Tey’re mostly involving water (either frozen or unfrozen): kiteboarding, mountaineering, skiing and skating. “Te most awe-inspiring experience in the world I have found is skiing the 7-mile piste from the top of Zermatt, Switzerland, into Italy with the Matterhorn in full view.”

FAMILY LIFE

“I feel I’m the most blessed man alive. I have a wonderful wife of 26 years, a son and now a daughter (in-law). My wife, Kimberly, and I have lived for a quarter of a century in a small apartment (with a great view) in New York City and have traveled the world for business and pleasure. Adventure travel is done with my son and the list is long. I have a lengthy list of highly accomplished ancestors giving me first-hand inspiration for setting life goals high.”

LITTLE KNOWN FACT ABOUT MARK

“I have repelled into, and climbed out of, a moulin on an Alaskan glacier — truly magical.”
