DISTRICT UPDATES ISI DISTRICT 1

(CONNECTICUT, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, NEW HAMPSHIRE, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT) by Alane Swiderski, District Director

The season has kicked off in District 1! We began with the Halloween Classic Competition on Oct. 28, hosted by Winterland Skating School. The event was a great success from start to finish. Mary Sullivan, skating director, and Ginger Crisp, competition director, adopted the Entry Eeze competition entry system as well as a new fee

structure and both were very well received. It was great to see fuller flights in most categories and the competition running over 12 hours. They also had a skater’s room with activities and amazing decorations. A great event! We look forward to Winterland hosting our ISI District Championships in June!

Our second competition of the year, the Icicle Invitational hosted by Navin Arena, was also a great success with a similar pattern. Stefanie DeSimone gave Entry Eeze another try and also saw great results from fuller flights and a longer competition day. We received so many compliments about this competition.

Congratulations to all the skaters who participated in these competitions and to Stefanie, Ginger and Mary for their amazing success. Thanks to Donna Rozon who was integral in helping both competitions get set up with Entry Eeze. We look forward to the rest of the District 1 competition season and many great things to come.

We held our first seminar for coaches new to ISI or through Bronze certification on Nov. 4 in Attleboro, Mass. It was well attended with approximately 30 participants. Thanks to our guest speakers, Dottie Cunningham, Gigi Kerrigan, Mary Sullivan and Kim Schaefer, who spoke about everything from ethics to technique. Thanks to Jen Whitfield and the New England Sports Village for hosting and Gigi for coordinating.

Our Jan. 15 seminar, judges workshop and annual awards ceremony was held at the Navin Arena. At this event, we presented our District 1 Professional Awards: For The Love of the Sport Award, Sky Full of Stars Award, Coach and Director of the Year and the District Merit Award. Our seminar series will conclude on April 15 in Revere, Mass., with another coach’s seminar and judges workshop. We hope to see many District 1 professionals at these events! As always, if any District 1 facility wishes to host a seminar for their staff and coaches, please let me know!

District 1 is gearing up to host the 2018 ISI Worlds! We have many teams making plans to ensure a wonderful District 1 showing and welcome and hope to see teams from all districts!
