cancer and life knocks you down, and you get up. You fail at relationships and you’re devastated, and you get up. You lose jobs because you weren’t what they were looking for, and you get up. You just get up. “Skating got back up in 1961. We lost our entire team in a plane crash … We got up. You just find a way to get up … and it’s so philosophical but it’s so beautiful because what comes next can be dangerous, scary, something you don’t want to face; it can be any one of those things, but you’ll never know unless you get up and go after what’s possible.”


ISI ANNUAL AWARDS DINNER At ISI’s 57th

Michael Booker made a special surprise appearance from Spain to present retiring ISI Executive Director Peter Martell with the ISI Lifetime Achievement Award. Dressed in black garbage bags and hiding behind an umbrella as he approached the podium, Booker, who served as Martell’s mentor while working at Ice Capades Chalets, shared several entertaining anecdotes about working with Martell, including one that explained Booker’s


“trashy” attire. Other honorees and guests included:


two-time Olympians and five-time U.S. champions Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner, who were inducted into the ISI Hall of Fame, with former coach John Nicks by their side; Bob Ullrich, who received the Frank J. Zamboni Award; and award-winning choreographer Rohene Ward, who was presented with the ISI President’s Award. ISI charter members Peter Dunfield, J. Richard


Gaw and Fritz Dietl were also honored posthumously with ISI Legacy Awards. Dunfield’s wife, Sonya, gave a touching address to the audience after accepting her late husband’s award. Katy Hayden’s granddaughter, Kailey Murphy, and dear friend Mary Sullivan were also on hand to accept the ISI Hall of Fame Award on behalf of Hayden, who passed away in February. IAIM, EVENTS & TRADE SHOW


All iAIM certification tracks, including the new Advanced Skating Director course, were offered at conference beginning on Tuesday, May 31. Approximately 100 received iAIM certifications. (For more information on iAIM at conference, please see page 18.) On Tursday, June 2, on-ice sessions


took place at Las Vegas Ice Center, where participants were treated to fantastic instruction and demonstrations by Rafael Arutyunyan, Alexei Kiliakov, Adam Rippon, Nadia Kanaeva, as well as ISI members David Santee, Jordan Mann, and Debbie and Gerry Lane. Tose attending the T-Mobile Arena
