iAIM Delivers Over 100 Graduates

by Lisa Fedick, CAE, Education and Certification Programs Committee Chair

“ Te great aim of education is not knowledge but action.” ~Herbert Spencer

T

he Ice Arena Institute of Management (iAIM) can serve as the bridge between “just a job” and

a career. ENERGY, is the single word to best

describe the atmosphere of the recent 2016 ISI/PSA Conferences & Trade Show in Las Vegas. Attendees from both organizations arrived with a hunger for knowledge. For many, this conference was their introduction to the iAIM program, and the resulting enthusiasm was infectious. Over 100 individuals completed one of the five certification tracks, while at least as many others audited classes. “Standing room only” very quickly became the new normal for our iAIM classrooms. Nine class certification modules,

equaling one third, in each of the full tracks — Management (CAM), Operations (CAO) and Programming (CAP) — were offered, as well as the complete Certified Skating Director track (CSD). Tirty- one students achieved perfect scores on their final exams, including seven in the CAO track, often the most feared refrigeration module! Kudos to instructor Art Sutherland, who somehow makes it all seem rather simple. Congratulations to John Flater, who not only completed the CAO track in Las Vegas, but also passed the final exam for his full CAM certification, which he completed in the iAIM online program. A total of 25 students also participated in the launch of the Advanced Skating

Director (ASD) track. Te ASD is a set of nine classes designed to provide another layer of education for the skating director, while targeting some of the daily challenges associated with the position. Course topics include: Ethics & Creating a Professional Culture, Keys to Program Retention & Skater Progression, Building Synchro, Teater on Ice & Intercollegiate Teams, Marketing & Promoting Skating Programs, Electronic Marketing & Social Media, Writing a Business Plan, Working Synergistically with ISI, PSA & USFS, Te Skater Development Model and Risk Management. I thank the following individuals whose

hard work, dedication and vision have created this new educational opportunity for our industry: Carol Rossignol, Scott McCoy, David Santee, Toni Cooper, Paige Scott, Gerry Lane, Margy Bennett, Tiesha DiMaggio, Elizabeth Tornton, Jason Dilworth, Corey Cash and Dan Foster. We are looking forward to offering the ASD again at the 2017 ISI/MIAMA Ice Arena Conference & Trade Show, May 30 - June 2, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Bloomington - Minneapolis South. Te graduate school layer of iAIM, the

Certified Arena Executive program (CAE), is bustling with activity. We would like to congratulate our two newest CAEs, Jamie Baringer and Robyn Bentley, who were both honored in Las Vegas, as they joined the elite group of nine other industry professionals. Tree other individuals are

expected to complete the final step in the process, the oral exam, this fall. through their CAE iAIM is pleased to once again be

partnering with the Minnesota Ice Arena Managers Association (MIAMA) and will be offering the full CAM school at their Fall 2016 Conference, Sept. 6-9, at Breezy Point Resort in Breezy Point, Minn. CAO Part 1 was offered at the North

East Ice Skating Association Managers Association’s (NEISMA) 2016 spring conference in Springfield, Mass. Te program was well attended and received, and we have been asked to return with CAO Part 2, as well as a CAE class in 2017. Te complete CAM, CAO and CAP

tracks are always available online at skateisi.org, but nothing replaces the experience and valuable networking that comes from a live classroom setting. We are available to bring iAIM to you, whether it be one class at a district seminar or a full track at a local conference. If you have questions on any of the iAIM offerings, or would like to schedule a program locally, please contact me at LAFedick@gmail.com.
