Letters to the Editor Visiting Down Under
During a recent trip to Australia, Paulette and I visited with Alan and Beth Ames in Hamilton, Victoria.
Alan’s collection is
primarily porcelain but he also has many glass insulators. He displays his insulators indoors and outdoors. We were able to spend several hours looking at the collection and discussing insulators.
While visiting, Beth served us afternoon tea which is almost mandatory in Australia.
Before we left Alan generously gave me two glass and two ceramic Australian insulators and the top of a dry spot insulator with a map of Australia with incuse embossing on the dome (pictured above). He also gave Paulette a one cent coin from 1951 with King George on the face, quite a collector’s item.
The insulators weighed too much to have in our baggage so I had to take them on the plane as carry-on luggage. When the bag went through security it was pulled over because it contained glass so I had to partially unwrap one of the insulators for further inspection. Now there is a New Zealand border guard who received an education on insulators.
