This month I thought it would be interesting to discuss several more odd insulators that are not pin-types like those discussed earlier in the September 2016 issue of CJ. There are many unusual designs for wiring cleats and knobs and some are unique enough to be covered by patents. Here are a few more with unique features and designs that are uncommon to rare.

It is unique in that it can be adjustable for two sizes of insulated wire by simply moving the insert from one side to the other and inserting a screw in the desired hole. P&S had several patents for various wiring insulators, but they did not obtain a patent for this unusual cleat. The adjustable cleat was introduced in 1892 and shown in their 1899 and 1900 catalogs, so apparently it did meet with some popularity. Currently, Barry’s specimen is the only one reported.

From 1899 Pass & Seymour catalog.
