Don.Briel@comcast.net Safety, Ethics & the Law

While collecting insulators is a fun hobby, there are some aspects that are well worth reviewing from time to time. They include remaining safe when hunting for insulators, knowing the law in regard to retrieving insulators, and having a good ethical base when pursuing this hobby. This article is not all comprehensive, nor an attempt to teach ethics, but rather good food for thought. There are several 

Safety Concerns

Probably the safest way to hunt insulators is to look for them on the ground along old abandoned lines. All of the safety rules that apply to hiking are also quite relevant here.

If you are seeking insulators that are still on old poles there is always a danger of the pole being weak and ready to fall over if climbed. The same is true if a ladder is used and leaned against the pole.

If wires are still strung between poles one must be certain that the lines are not still in use. If the lines are still in use and tampered with critical service could be disrupted. Also, if the wires are still in use they could be live thus creating the danger of electrical shock. If they are not still in use there’s still the danger of a lightning strike anywhere along the line, even many miles away. Checkout this article on safety at: insulators.info/articles/safety. htm. There isn’t a single insulator that is worth serious injury or death.
