TECHNOLOGY TRENDS IN CONSTRUCTION

Tat is one unique component of this that has the potential to really change the industry.”

Technology Offers Variety of Solutions

HCSS Trucking had its official

launch on March 15, 2019 and had about 40 customers, and counting, who have deployed the system about three months after its release. HCSS Heavy Job customers are among the prime users taking advantage of the HCSS Trucking solution. Customers are utilizing the system

recognizing where everybody is in that space and providing solutions right there for them.”

Contractors’ Perspective in Mind

Te lack of a strong consolidated

solution in the heavy haul trucking sector made it “ripe for competition” when HCSS started research and devel- opment for HCSS Trucking in 2016, McDonald noted. Tey included alpha and beta testing with existing HCSS customers in that R&D process early on and spent a lot of time obtaining feedback as they worked to devise the best solution for this market sector. “Te way the whole application

started was by us sitting down with contractors, brokers and truck drivers and listening to them to understand what that ultimate solution needed to look like, then trying to figure out how we could make something that people could use today,” McDonald said. “It has just grown from there.”

www.AGC-CA.org From the outset HCSS kept the

perspective of its contractor base specifically in mind as it approached the development of the new technology. “We knew the contractor doesn’t

want to make a big investment from a capital perspective in these third-party trucks, yet the contractor is ultimately responsible for the trucks and the work they are doing on the project,” McDonald said. As a result HCSS decided it would give the Bluetooth Proximity beacons to its contractor customers for free in order to grow the system, while also pushing out the placement of LoadBots at a variety of places where the trucks would be picking up or dropping off product. “Tat Bluetooth device lives inside

that truck forever for all intents and purposes,” he said. “Te Bluetooth beacon will work across contractors, across brokers and will provide data for any job that truck works on that is taking advantage of HCSS Trucking.

in a variety of ways, involving every- thing from verifying loads, stops and cycles in real time without paper tickets, to resolving payment disputes with owners and making payment to drivers and brokers more quickly. Tere have been several cases in which it has been employed to provide immediate evidence of work performed to the owner, McDonald said. During his more than 13 years

working for HCSS, McDonald said he has “seen quite a bit of technology solutions come and go throughout the years” in the heavy construction market sector. For him, HCSS Trucking sparks real excitement with its potential to disrupt the industry and create positive change. “It’s kind of a brand-new way of

thinking about the trucking problem,” he commented. “We’re bringing something to the industry that we really do believe is going to revolu- tionize the way people do trucking, because it’s bringing groups together that have historically not been able to work together except on paper. Tis is the first solution that I see trying to meet each party – the contractor, broker and driver – where they’re at, and to meet the needs of each without one necessarily having the upper hand. Tat is a key differentiator that helped bring HCSS Trucking to fruition. We’re just beginning to see the benefits of it.” 
