Fulfilling Our New Mission: Shaping Policy

AGC of California has been a strong

advocate for the construction industry for nearly a century. And as an industry, we have used our voice, passion and power to influence policy decisions at the federal, state, and local levels. As we continue to look forward to our next 100 years as an association, AGC of California has placed an emphasis around shaping policy. It’s one of the three pillars that holds up our mission statement:

about shaping policy, improving industry relationships, and developing our

use the words “shaping policy” and not a more general term like “advocacy.” Advocacy, though a very important function, can be ambiguous and vague. As an industry that is heavily regulated and, in many ways contract-driven, we under- stand that words matter. We intentionally crafted a mission

that impact our industry at all levels of government. We have reinvested our resources to provide staff support at the local and statewide level to ensure more access to policy makers, both elected and appointed, so our members can voice their needs and concerns. We have aligned our

divisions, councils, and committees around our mission pillars to ensure the relevant conversations are occurring so we can have the most impact on developing and shaping policy. Finally, as we prepared for our annual legislative summit, we retooled the programing to provide more opportunities for our members to commu- nicate their needs and issues with legislative leaders who

in 2019 introduced more than 2,700 bills. As we continue to build our

statement to empower our members and our industry to focus on one of the most fundamental and impactful tasks we have in this space: shaping the words and nuances of the policies that impact our work every day. Shaping policy is the action we must take to ensure that we are creating opportunities to build and thus strengthen our great state. It is through this passion for shaping

policy that we have renewed and aligned our services to focus on how we can influence the drafting and changing of policies, legislation and regulations

foundation for the next 100 years of AGC of California, you will continue to see new opportunities for you to engage and create opportunities to support our industry’s ability to grow. For it is when our industry is growing that we can see a future for the state of California. Shaping policy is one of the integral and inherent ways we are living our core belief that construction industry is vital to the success of California.
