Delivering Solutions to Array of Challenges

As with any mega-project, there were plenty of challenges to overcome

throughout the five-year design and construction process. Te site topog- raphy was especially challenging with many unforeseen conditions. Set into a hillside, one side of the site was bay mud while the other comprised hard bedrock, necessitating a carefully designed and executed shoring plan.

during the 2016-17 winter added to the difficulty. McCarthy worked closely with its design partners, structural engineers, key trade partners and OSHPD to mitigate the foundation and shoring challenges. “With

the entire team working together, we were able to come up with a solution that supported our project and the schedule,” Garcia said. McCarthy’s utility mapping

expertise was a key solution that allowed the team to identify and avoid existing utilities that were not accurately depicted in the existing hospital’s as-builts. Te team overlayed the mapping images in the 3D model to work out conflicts with new utilities to be installed before work was put in place. “Tat was a key component to be able to understand what was in front of us and mitigate any impacts,” Garcia said. mentation of McCarthy’s EQUIP program, which enabled early equipment procurement and instal- lation. McCarthy self-performed procurement and installation of more than 7,600 new pieces of medical equipment and transferred 1,169 pieces from the hospital’s existing building. Representing the first healthcare

project in California to utilize the company’s EQUIP program, the approach allowed the building team to coordinate directly with the project’s engineering trades and vendors to oversee equipment start-up, testing, commission and training phases. It enables cost savings, since equipment was procured earlier, and also benefits
