fter several decades of joint industry advocacy and grass- roots work, the California


State Legislature passed, and the Governor signed, Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act on April 28, 2017. As passed, the Act increases California’s transportation investment by $54 billion over the next decade to fix neglected and crumbling infrastructure. Specifically, the money was slated for highway repairs/mainte- nance, bridge repairs, strengthening trade corridors, provide congestion relief, improve/update mass transit, and repair local streets. California taking a major step towards investing in our aging roads and bridges and making them safe. In addition to increasing user fees


on gasoline and vehicle registration for the first time since 1994, SB 1 also closed a loophole on zero emission vehicles to ensure that those highway


users now pay their fair share for the construction and maintenance of our transportation systems in the state.


Local Transportation Projects A majority of the funding in the act


is being programmed by local transpor- tation authorities throughout the state on the infrastructure improvements that local governments know are most in need of repair and construction. At present, more than 6,500 local trans- portation improvement projects are underway in every California community, including:


 3,727 projects fixing potholes and repaving crumbling, unsafe roads.


 1,571 projects dedicated to improving road and driver safety.
