Great Lakes Trailbuilders, LLC has been constructing and designing trails since 2008, working with a wide variety of partners to ensure that all interests get the trail they want. Over the 20 years, experience has shown that nearly any proj- ect can be tackled through a hybrid model. “Hybrid contract- ing” is a partnership between a professional trailbuilder working with volunteers, along with an organization or another land manager to complete trail projects. Great Lakes Trailbuilders has had the opportunity to col- laborate and train many different groups over the years and see their continued involvement after the project is complete. In the end, hybrid contracting provides shared responsibility in the labor and design, inspires a sense of long-term owner- ship of the trail in community members and future genera- tions, and creates a greater level of sustainability and satisfac- tion for everyone involved. Great Lakes Trailbuilders has worked building hybrid
projects on a wide variety of projects, including collaborating with a county park system to design a trail system that was then built with volunteers, building and installing a 40’ fiber- glass bridge, working extensively with youth corps, and working globally to teach sustainable trail design and con- struction.
