THERE’S NO DOUBT THE SCHELKUN FAMILY is a radiator family. In fact, three generations run Empire Radiator Service based in Rochester, New York. More than half of the team are Schelkuns: Mike, Jim, Wendy, and Andrew.


Mike and Jim Schelkun bought the business in 1997. Prior to that, Mike worked for Kodak for 28 years doing Research and Development. “My actual background is in chemistry. I knew nothing about the radiator business before,” said Mike.


Jim’s background is in automotive technologies and was a Matco Tools distributor when he learned one of his customers was selling his business, Empire Radiator Service. In the early days, it was a full-service auto repair shop focusing on radiators, heaters, and air conditioning. The business later transitioned into the world of heat exchanger services and then expanded into DPF cleaning and services for EGRs and fuel tanks. They also do welding and fabrication as well as sandblasting.
