Department News GOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS

Fall Brings Preparation for 2022 State Legislative Session By David Kent, Vice President of Legislative and Advocacy Programming

With fall now upon us, it’s an exciting time here at the MBA. Te government relations staff has been busy this interim with meetings and fundraisers. Our focus now turns to preparing for what is expected to be a busy 2022 state legislative session. MBA’s legislative affairs committee will meet soon to discuss potential legislative topics. An overview of our legislative agenda will be shared in the next edition of Te Missouri Banker.

MBA staff also will meet with our PAC committee to discuss the 2022 election cycle. Although it seems far away, the election is a hot topic here in Jefferson City. Tis is partly because of U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt’s announcement earlier this year that he would not seek re-election — opening up the seat for the first time in years. It’s expected there will be a domino effect, meaning several state lawmakers will jump into races that, up until this spring, were not expected to be open. Te redistricting process also adds another layer to the election intrigue that we will be closely monitoring.

Missouri’s annual veto session was held Sept. 15. Our efforts were primarily spent building and strengthening our relationships with legislators at various receptions and

fundraisers. Veto session fundraisers have become a staple throughout the past several years, and this year didn’t disappoint. Tere were more than 20 events supporting more than 80 legislators in Jefferson City throughout the course of the week.

Speaking of building relationships, we welcome the opportunity to host you and your staff this upcoming legislative session for a Target Banker visit. MBA’s Target Banker program is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to meet with your elected officials at the Missouri Capitol to discuss the issues that are important to the banking industry. Before your visit, MBA will share information on various bills to ensure your time is productive and worthwhile. More information will be relayed before the start of session in January.

Lastly, a quick thank you to all who have invested in the MBA state and regional PACs. Contributions to our political action committees support lawmakers who help champion banking issues. If you haven’t already done so, please consider an investment in MBA’s PACs. For more information, please contact me at dkent@mobankers.com or Emily Lewis at elewis@ mobankers.com.
