Cultivating a Promising Future for Tomorrow’s Leaders

Max Cook, President and CEO Missouri Bankers Association

There are moments that  Tose moments could be ones of celebration, such as a promotion, or ones of lessons learned — a setback that made you more determined to achieve your goal. When you’ve been in this industry long enough, you recall those moments — the good, bad and ugly — and understand each has led you to a particular moment in your career.

I’ve been thinking about those moments lately … April marks my 30th year with the Missouri Bankers Association. At times, it doesn’t seem that long ago when I first walked into MBA’s office at 207 E. Capitol Ave. in Jefferson City. Ten there are those days when I can’t believe it’s already been 30 years and wonder where the time went. Troughout the last three decades, MBA has initiated many programs to enhance your banks’ services and operations. One of our

most successful endeavors is relatively new in our association’s history, and it has proved successful for the banking industry and its future.

MBA established Banking Leadership Missouri in 2009 to provide an opportunity for up-and-coming bankers to fully enhance their knowledge and abilities to lead their banks and our industry. Nearly 140 men and women are alumni of Banking Leadership Missouri. Many who went through the program were vice presidents, managers or directors in various departments. Today, some Banking Leadership Missouri alumni serve as bank presidents and CEOs. Bank executives saw the potential of these men and women to someday direct the bank’s operations, and they invested in the professional development of these bankers.

As MBA begins preparations to host its seventh Banking

Leadership Missouri series, I strongly encourage you to see which individual at your bank would benefit from this program. Our banks and communities are coming off a year that none of us has ever experienced. In many instances, bankers at various levels throughout the organization took initiatives to find new ways to complete their tasks, providing reassurance to their co-workers and their customers. What do you envision for this individual’s future at your bank? Is he or she a future member of the executive team? Could she or he be the bank CEO?

Courses taught through Banking Leadership Missouri prepare these men and women for their future roles in your organization. Leadership topics for the upcoming series focus on the following.  Leading Versus Managing Relationship Building  Cohesive Team Development
