Discovering a Piece of MBA History

Sorting through a box of historical photos for an upcoming auction, Dick Hutchison stopped as one particular photograph caught his eye.

Hutchison, president of La Monte Community Bank, owns an auctioneer business in central Missouri. On many weekends, Hutchison can be found overseeing estate and property auctions. It was at a recent estate auction that Hutchison discovered a piece of history from the Missouri Bankers Association.

A box of historical photos at an estate auction included a photograph of MBA’s second annual convention. Te photograph showed a large arched sign erected in the city of Sedalia welcoming bankers to the association’s second convention that was held June 9, 1892.

In the photograph, the sign is diagonally across from the Pettis County Courthouse in Sedalia. Te building to the leſt of the archway is the Sedalia National Bank, known today as the Sedalia Trust Building. Tis building is currently under renovation. Te building to the right of archway no longer stands, but the Bothwell Hotel now occupies that location. Built in 1927, the hotel also recently was restored.

Huthison, who has been an auctioneer for 40 years, is celebrating nearly four decades as a banker. He enjoys both banking and auctioneering, as both allow him the opportunity to meet new people throughout Missouri communities.
