FROM THE PRESIDENT Navigating new territory with the help of data
M
aking prudent decisions can be challenging. We can follow what our heart desires or mindfully consider a best
course of action—but choose either path without having good data to support the decision and we’re asking for trouble. Meaningful and useful data, as opposed to anecdotal feelings and beliefs, inform our decision-making hearts and minds in ways that can lead to excellent and sensible decisions.
Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”
“Our assessment also helped us gather insights from musicians who are not members of NPM.”
Our NPM staff and leadership continue to learn better ways of serving NPM’s mission and members through the work that is part of the Assessment Phase of NPM 2.0—our ongoing initiative to re-imagine this Association. Be sure to read on page 32 about how the NPM Board is learning about the state of pastoral music ministry across the country. Our recent assessment has helped us gather—for the first time—information and insights from pastoral musicians and other church leaders who are not members of NPM. Tis data, along with the great feedback you, our members, have provided, will be used in crafting NPM’s future when we enter the Design Phase.
Tis issue of Pastoral Music also includes details about the upcoming 2020 Louisville Convention. We are beyond thrilled about this year’s convention. Exciting new breakouts, speakers,
Key Changes, plenums and performances, all exploring the sacramental theme of baptism. Spend some time reviewing all that’s planned for this year’s summer NPM experience in Louisville, Kentucky, a truly hospitable city.
As we continue planning for future conventions (remember, NPM conventions are NOT going away), we’re learning more and more about the benefits of running them in “big box hotels” that avoid high convention center costs. As our Assocication is further re-imagined, we’re using the feedback you’ve provided in helping NPM offer more meaningful experiences.
We’re also learning about future programming and will soon be announcing an entirely new way of gathering and learning together. As we take steps forward in building better ways of bringing members together, we do so while always gathering as much information as possible about what members need.
An African proverb says, “Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.” Te process of re-envisioning an organization is uncharted, but necessary—territory for us. Let’s remember that as we continue navigating waters that at times are still and at others less than smooth, we’re becoming more skillful every day.
