November, 2019 Dear Music Director:
As we put the finishing touches on this latest November choral mailing recording and octavos, the Chicago area is bracing for the inevitable colder weather. But no matter how chilly it may be outside, the warm voices of the WLP session singers, under the expert direction of Paul French, animate with consummate skill the music in the enclosed packet. It is a real pleasure to hear these new compositions come to life.

14. Give Tanks to the Lord: Psalm 118 006440 (E) .............................................................. $1.65
Robert W. Schaefer SATB, cantor, assembly; guitar, keyboard
Tis contemplative setting of Psalm 118 is one of Bob’s final compositions before his untimely passing in 2018. His well-conceived writing for choir and assembly always featured finely crafted singable tunes and harmonies. Te refrain’s simple melody, utilizing chord tones of the harmonic structure, makes this easy for the assembly to join in almost at first hearing. Te verses are set in a question-and-answer dialog between cantor and choir. More vocal forces are added with each stanza, bringing a richness to the overall sound and effect highlighting the words of this lovely composition. Tanks, Bob.
Uses Topical: Love of God for us, joy, salvation Church Year: Easter; Easter 2A, B, C
15. O Sacrum Convivium 009049 (E) .................................................................................... $1.85
Translation by Alan J. Hommerding, music by Richard Farrant SATB a cappella
Tis well-loved sixteenth-century motet by English composer Richard Farrant lends itself to successful performance by smaller or less experienced choirs. Perhaps best known with its original text (“Lord, for thy tender mercy’s sake”), it also came to be paired with the Latin text included here, “O Sacrum Convivium,” written by Tomas Aquinas as the antiphon to the Magnificat for vespers of the feast of Corpus Christi. In this edition, we add the fine translation of the Latin text by Alan Hommerding, “O Feast of Life.” His work is poetic, faithful to the meaning of the Latin antiphon, and carefully crafted to follow the cadence and syllabic emphasis as well, making it perfectly suited for this musical setting. If your choir knows this music, these eucharistic texts give you many more occasions to sing this motet, either in Latin or in this fine new English translation. If it’s new to your group, this gives you another reason to add it to your repertoire.
