and lasts for three to five days. The germs attack the mucuous mem- brane, or lining of the air passages – nose, throat, and bronchial tubes- there is usually a hard cough, espe- cially at night.”

Treatment The treatment is similar to what

we are told today. We should go to bed not only for your sake but to avoid spreading the disease to others. We should eat plenty of nourishing food, remain perfectly quiet and don’t worry. There is no cure for influenza, the disease must run its course. “Vick’s VapoRub has been effective and should be used at the first sign of a cold.” (October 1918 Associate Reformed Presbyterian) This germ disease is spread

through human contact, chiefly through coughing, sneezing, or spitting. Avoid crowds, common drinking cups, roller towels, etc.

Synod Meeting Date Moderator Kennedy set a new date for the Synod meeting to be held at Tabernacle

Church in Charlotte, NC for Dec. 11, 1918. Several ministers expressed their concern to meet so soon. “In my judgement it is a mistake to hold the meeting of Synod Dec. 11th. The influ-

enza is still a menace. It breaks out anew at every opportunity. Because of its prevalence and its tendency to break out afresh, travelling on the train is unsafe, every assemblage of people is unsafe, and the coming of people from communities where it is epidemic is a public menace.” “If the meeting of Synod is held Dec. 11th many will not attend. There will be

serious danger to those who do attend, and danger to the homes and communities from which they come. This influenza is a veritable courage. We should take no chances with it. I would suggest a further postponement of the meeting of Synod. There are others who concur with me in this suggestion.” J.S. Moffatt (November 1918 Associate Reformed Presbyterian)

Postponed Again Moderator Kennedy postponed the meeting of Synod again on November

29 as to not assume responsibility for danger to the health and lives of those attending. The Moderator asked for date suggestions on December 5 trying to get an idea of what worked for the majority.

Synod Meeting The meeting was set for April 30th, 1919 and hosted by Tabernacle in Char-

lotte, NC. The Moderator opened with a sermon from Hebrew 12:2, “Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne.”?
