Sherwood’s Story BY RON BEARD

A short time ago, Sherwood sat down with his dad and said, “Thanks, dad, for always being there to help me when I have questions. Now, I’m sort of scared about all the things that are going around.”

His dad said, “That’s all right. It’s been shocking for everybody. What was normal last year isn’t normal now. We’re not even certain what normal really is.”

He told Sherwood that there were two things we can’t do! “First,” he said, “We can’t pretend that it’s all really not important and then decide to ignore it. Just pretending doesn’t change things.”

“Second, we can’t panic and then try to hide from everything. You can’t live your life hiding from everything all by yourself. That doesn’t change things either.”

“That’s what we used to say an ostrich did. Putting its head in the sand when it’s afraid. It isn’t true that when you pretend things aren’t there they go away. Hiding from the whole world is no answer either.”

Our Bible says: “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So, don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

Sherwood’s dad said, “God reminds us of how much he loves and cares for us, and we need to follow His example and show our love and care for others. We need to think about the things we do and how they affect the people around us. We need to look for ways to show God’s love by loving them. We can pray for them, stay in touch with them, help however we can those who need it. Above all, remember the God who made everything loves us. When we remember that and do those things, we can overcome fear.”

Try this easy and fun craft with your family! It’s a cute, simple decoration for our country’s birthday and it uses supplies that you probably already have around the house. Let’s get to work!

Grab: • 1 empty toilet paper roll • Blue and white paint • Red and white yarn • A hole puncher • Scissors • A paintbrush

Go: Step 1: Take your cardboard roll and paint it blue all over. Let dry. Step 2: Paint white stars on your cardboard roll. Let dry. Step 3: Cut strands of red and white yarn. Ask an adult to help your punch holes along the bottom of your cardboard roll, then tie a strand of yarn through each hole. So cute! Step 4: To hang your windsock, punch holes at the top and loop some yarn through.

You’re finished! Now find a spot to hang it on your front porch, in your kitchen in your bedroom, or anywhere else in your home.

What else can you and your family come up with to make this 4th of July memorable? We’d love to hear about it! Send your drawings, photos, and stories to: MD Bult, 21 Long Meadow Lane, Columbia, SC 29223
