Scott, please tell readers about yourself—where you are origi- nally from, your educational background, which facilities you have worked in during your career and what attracted you to this industry in the first place?
Simply put, I’m an Iowa boy and proud to have the opportunity to serve and represent my community and Iowa in our industry and profession. My hometown is Fort Dodge, Iowa, located in north central Iowa. After graduating high school and Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge with my Associate of Arts degree, I transferred to the University short 18-month marketing gig with a hydraulic components and parts crazy business. I really wanted to relocate to a larger market where the excitement was – more entertainment options, more people, and more Assistant position at the Des Moines Convention Center, and fortunate- Like many, I got into this business accidentally and not fully knowing what it entailed, but fell in love with it quickly and am hooked for life! For several reasons, I had the opportunity to expand my role quickly and got involved with events and guest services. I spent almost 10 years at the Des Moines Convention Center, which became the Polk County Convention Complex, and then became Polk County Regional Facilities when we merged with Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines. After a taste of both convention centers and arenas, I knew I wanted to grow and expand my career and eventually have the opportunity to lead position with VenuWorks at the Clay County Regional Events Center in Spencer, Iowa, located in northwest Iowa. By our industry standards, a very small venue in a very small market. I loved the job and the opportu- nity. Leading a small venue provided me the opportunity to be hands on
in all departments and very active in learning all facets of our industry. I spent almost 11 years at the Clay County Regional Events Center in Spen- cer. In early 2015, I had an opportunity to transfer within our VenuWorks family to Bridge View Center in Ottumwa, Iowa. Ottumwa is located in southeast Iowa. The Bridge View Center includes both convention space and a theater. I now have the opportunity to also learn the ins and outs of a theater. My career has been focused on small venues and small markets, and I am blessed and grateful to have the opportunity to lead these venues and serve the smaller markets.
Now that you have achieved your CVE, would you tell us why you chose to pursue it? Did you learn anything about yourself while completing the processes?
Professional development and personal growth and achievement. We can never stop learning! The business world is changing constantly, and this - most 25 years ago. I strive for success and would like the venue(s) I have the opportunity to lead to be one of the best and successful in both their community and within our industry. The CVE program has provided me with a great opportunity to build on my leadership skills. I love my current job and love working for my current employer, VenuWorks. However, none of us know what the future may hold and the changes that may come with time. The added future employers if or when that time may come. Did I learn anything a college-level essay. Seriously, the CVE process provided me with a great
