The Vehicular Ramming Threat to Public Venues


By Mark Lang How do we protect our guests from the threat of a vehicular attack?


The use of vehicles to kill and destroy continues to be an often-utilized tac- tic by domestic and international terrorist overseas and in our homeland. Continued online propaganda sent out by Al Qaeda and ISIS promotes such use of vehicles as weapons to their many supporters. Vehicular at- tacks are a simple means for terrorists to wreak havoc at any venue and are    been used as weapons of destruction.


RECENT VEHICULAR ATTACKS      

Charlottesville, Virginia, killing one and injuring 28. • October 2017: A terrorist used a rental truck to run over pedestri- ans on a bicycle path in New York City, killing eight and injuring 11. • August 2018: A terrorist drove a vehicle into a crowd of cyclists and pedestrians before crashing into a security barrier outside Parlia- ment in London, England, injuring three persons.

UNIFORMED POLICE PRESENCE Law enforcement continues to be used in a conventional manner at


 -   protection. First, do not underestimate a terrorist’s ability to conduct basic surveillance around your venue. Plotting the use of a vehicle to run over guests may not be as last minute as you think. The intentional observation of police personnel behaviors and work habits are not that   and the times that they are most present and working can be easily achieved in as little as one visit. The simple fact remains that uniformed  by itself to prevent a vehicular attack.
