IR UpFront In Memoriam: Stanley Baum, MD, FSIR
Stanley Baum, MD, FSIR, a founding member of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) and SIR’s first president, died on Oct. 15, 2022, at the age of 92.
One of the first interventional radiologists in the United States, Dr. Baum was a pioneer whose research developed a minimally invasive means to stop gastrointestinal bleeding. He also helped develop magnetic resonance imaging and established the first hospital-based magnetic resonance imaging program in the nation, according to his biography on the University of Pennsylvania Perleman School of Medicine website. Dr. Baum was chair of the school’s radiology department from 1975– 1996. In 2001, Perleman established
the Stanley Baum Professorship, which is awarded to an outstanding tenured professor in the school’s radiology department.
As an active member of SIR, Dr. Baum continued to serve in many leadership positions after his presidency, to include roles on the Government Affairs Committee and committee celebrating SIR’s 25th anniversary. He delivered the Charles T. Dotter Lecture at SIR’s 1987 Annual Scientific Meeting. In 1989, he helped found the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Research and Education Foundation, now SIR Foundation, later serving on its board of directors. He remained a generous supporter of SIR Foundation, fueling IR research.
In honor of his contributions to interventional radiology, Dr. Baum was awarded SIR’s highest honor—its Gold Medal—in 1998, the same year he helped establish the Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering at the National Institutes of Health.
In addition to being award the SIR Gold Medal, he also received similar honors from the Radiological Society of North America, the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Association of University Radiologists, the American College of Radiology, the Society of Gastrointestinal Radiology and the Academy of Radiologic Research.
