IR UpFront Endovascular neurosurgery now a recognized
focused practice Interventional radiologists trained and practicing in neuroendovascular surgery or interventional neuroradiology may now be recognized as a CNS Endovascular Surgery Recognized Focused Practice (RFP), which has been approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).
The RFP designation was approved in 2017 by the ABMS to distinguish areas of practice that emerge due to medical advancements and continuing physician education. To be eligible for RFP designation, physicians must complete an approved training program or meet clinical practice criteria showing that they spend at least 50% of their practice time on the care of patients with cerebrovascular disease.
There are three pathways for radiologists to receive approved fellowship training:
• Completion of an ACGME accredited diagnostic radiology residency, followed by completion of an ACGME diagnostic neuroradiology fellowship.
• Completion of an ACGME accredited IR/DR residency, which includes the neurointerventional radiology pathway.
• Completion of an ACGME residency and ABR certification in IR/DR followed by an independent prerequisite pathway that complies with requirements dictated by the ACGME and the Committee on Advanced Subspecialty training.
The designation lasts for 10 years. For more information and credentialing requirements, visit
