George Toma Inducted into the Luzerne County (PA) Sports Hall of Fame As reported in SportsField Management magazine September 2022 issue in the SFMA in Action section: Congratulation to SFMA founder, George Toma, on his induction into the Luzerne County Sports Hall of Fame. Toma was honored with a ceremony celebrating all of his accomplishments as a legendary groundskeeper and one of the four founders of SFMA. Based in Luzerne County in northeastern Pennsylvania, the Luzerne County Sports Hall of Fame is a nonprofit organization that endeavors to perpetuate the memory of local athletes, male and female, who have brought lasting fame and recognition to the state of Pennsylvania through their athletic achievements and community involvement. Also eligible for such distinction are those individuals who have brought similar recognition to the state through their contributions to sports in general in managerial, promotional, and other influential capacities.
SFMA Announces ‘Stars and Stripes’ Contest Winners
to the 2023 SFMA Annual Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. Additionally, a poster of the winning field will be displayed at the conference. Entries were submitted on Facebook through July 12 and the public had the opportunity to vote and ultimately name the winning design. Atlee High School’s homecoming design was submitted by Marc Moran and depicted the school’s name in a brilliant red, white, and blue theme on its football field. Moran has run the Turf Science Program at Atlee High School since 2001 and under his supervision, it also won the SFMA High School/Parks Softball Field of the Year Award in
2009.Second place went to Timothy Siegel with the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers for the "Red, White and Subtle" submission, while Ben Hartman and the Wichita Wind Surge’s "Riverfront Flyover" took third place. “Te Stars and Stripes contest always receives many creative and fun entries and has become a great summer tradition,” says James Bergdoll, CSFM, President of SFMA. “It’s wonderful to see the hard work of the students at Atlee High School pay off with some bragging rights and great that these young people have been exposed to our industry in such a positive way.”
As reported in a press release from the Sports Field Management Association (SFMA)—the non-profit, professional association for the 2,700 men and women who manage sports fields worldwide—the students of the Atlee High School Turf Science Program in Mechanicsville, Virginia, have won the association’s sixth annual "Stars and Stripes" contest. Te competition allows SFMA members to craft and submit Fourth of July-themed field designs with mowing equipment or paint for eligibility to win a complimentary registration

OPEI’s TurfMutt Foundation Renews Partnership with CBS Shows Mission Unstoppable and Lucky Dog Te Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI)’s TurfMutt Foundation is proud to announce a renewed partnership with Mission Unstoppable and Lucky Dog on CBS. Both shows are produced by Hearst Media Production Group. Filming began this fall at Lucky’s Mutt Madness, a national dog adoption event held during Equip Exposition, the international landscape, outdoor living, and equipment exposition, in Louisville, Kentucky, October 18-21. Te TurfMutt Foundation and its spokesdog, Mulligan, the “TurfMutt,” are dedicated to educating people on ways to create purposeful and environmentally- responsible living landscapes that everyone, including pets and wildlife, can enjoy. It also supports animal rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption, including sponsoring Lucky’s Mutt Madness in conjunction with the Kentucky Humane Society. Lucky’s Mutt Madness mission aligns well with Lucky Dog, an Emmy award winning show whose hosts rescue unwanted pups and place them with loving families, and which has been part of the CBS Saturday morning lineup for nine seasons. Te TurfMutt Foundation sponsored pet-friendly backyard makeovers and viewer tips in Lucky Dog, from 2015-2019 and again in 2022.
