Bobby, it’s been hunting, but he’s recently cut back on that and taken up golf instead. He says, “Now I take Tuesdays off for golfing. it’s helped me unwind and not get so burned out on things. I also collect antique Winchester firearms. To me, they’re works of art. I go to gun shows three or four times a year to track down special ones. And the entire family likes hanging out together, especially at the lake.”

And, typical of Bobby, he’s still giving back, both to the industry and to the community. In 2012, he received the Professional of the Year award from the Tennessee Turfgrass Association (TTA), its highest honor, because of his never-ending commitment to the turfgrass industry. He served as the inaugural president of the MidSouth Turfgrass Council. Bobby also has been active in the Memphis area Home Builders Association and with civic organizations such as the Memphis and Arlington Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau. He recently competed in a golf tournament fundraiser for Concord Academy, the school where Shelby earned her high school diploma, “to help keep it going strong so other kids can learn and thrive as Shelby has.”


Everyone needs a little downtime and the multiple Winstead enterprises give the family the resources to enjoy it. For Kim and Shelby, their downtime passion is working with horses. For Robert, it’s working out. For

Bobby adds, “I’ve heard so many people in TPI say they are holding on to their piece of property so they can give it to their kids so they can continue the business. Tat may be doing


them a disservice. If I had done that, I’d still have only the 74 acres that we started with. Instead, plan your purchases to coincide with the way your city/area is developing; sell the land when growth gets near you; and use the proceeds to buy more land further out. You’ll be able to purchase twice the land with the same money. If I’d just held on to that original 74 acres, we would never have had the opportunity to grow all of our family businesses.”
