ASSOCIATION UPDATES

A Message from Turf Australia’s CEO Matt Lunn

Matt Lunn stepped into his role as the newly appointed CEO of Turf Australia on January 9, 2023. On January 18, he reached out to members. A few excerpts from that correspondence are shared here.

Turf Australia has some very strong foundations in that it is nationally recognized in the horticultural industry, its brand is Australia-wide, and it has built a strong alliance with Hort Innovations and the levy fund.

Like any CEO’s wish list, my arrival is a time for change and to build on those foundations I mentioned above. My background in horticulture over the past 35 years will, of course, assist me in understanding your farms. My focus for you, however, comes with much broader thinking. Tis is a national association, so it must be presented accordingly. My responsibility with the Board is to drive it into a new era with a particular focus on the CULTURE of the organization, and the work that we do from an operational level behind the scenes is delivered professionally to the industry.

When I met Bec Sellick, TA’s President, back in November, I explained for TA to go forward, it needed to go in for a maintenance check on my arrival. Te rest will start falling into place if we get the basics right.

Some 20 to 30 years ago, belonging to any association was predominantly about having someone to talk to when technical support was required. Since then, there has been a massive shift. We have Google reps running around from companies selling products and providing valuable backup and, of course, multiple associations in industries. Just think how many are turf-related. Te market is full of associations all vying for your hard-earned money. Tis means that members' benefits often weaken, and if members become disengaged too, very quickly, the annual subscription becomes more of a MAYBE than an ESSENTIAL.

So, I would like to ask you: Why are you a member of Turf Australia, and what are the benefits to your business? Your answers will be varied, but your feedback is critical. If you honestly can’t answer, then TA needs to roll up its sleeves, and together we need to make membership an important tool for you.

From now on, I will work with you to find and develop five clear pillars that form your membership. Tese pillars must help to support and grow your business as well as lift the professionalism of the Turf Production Industry across Australia, thus making it sustainable for the future.

So, I look forward to meeting and working with you all over the coming year. Please reach out to me if you have questions or comments by email matt.lunn@turfaustralia. com.au or by phone 0410 714 207.

2021/2022 Turf Statistics Survey will be released in March 2023

Turf Australia issued this call for action. Tis project is one of the most important projects to come out of your levy dollars, however for it to work, we need your input. Please take the time in March to fill in the survey.

Data drives decision making, and facts and figures are what is needed to get the attention of government and legislators. It helps make strategic decisions on the future of the industry about where to invest resources and focus on key areas. Importantly, it helps us show the true value of our industry. In challenging times, such as floods and droughts, this information is crucial. With government recovery efforts inundated with requests for support and assistance, the availability of reliable data from the levy- funded statistics projects ensures that Turf Australia and state associations can act quickly and provide reliable data.

Responses are confidential and anonymous. Data collection and analysis is being managed by our partner Taverner Research. To ensure all survey responses remain anonymous and confidential, any contact details provided will be securely stored by Taverner Research. NO identifiable data will be provided to Turf Australia or Hort Innovation.

All growers who complete the survey will have access to the online, interactive, benchmarking tool to help you compare your business with other growers in your region and across the country. Te insights can be used by growers to prioritize investments, make informed workforce decisions, and plan for the future.
