Name: Sharon Wagener DeWolf, DC

Clinic name and location: Redmond Back & Neck Care Clinic, Redmond, WA

What chiropractic school did you graduate from? I graduated from Life West Chiropractic College in 1998.

What made you want to be a chiropractor?

I’m from a small town in Iowa, just up the road from Palmer College of Chiropractic. When I was 17 my sister brought home her soon- to-be husband, Michael Breneman, who had come from Washington State to study chiropractic. What he had to share with me about chiropractic principles and philosophy was astounding to me! I decided on the spot to become a chiropractor. An internship with Dr Virgil Strang, Dean of Philosophy and later President of Palmer College greatly inspired me. Multiple visits to study at the Gonstead Clinic in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin also greatly influenced my desire to pursue a lifelong career in chiropractic.

How has being a member of the WSCA helped you? The WSCA has brought me a great sense of belonging and has offered me leadership for professional development through education, advocacy and support for all our member doctors. With my WSCA membership, I feel like something bigger than me

“has my back”! It’s comforting to know that a strong organization like the WSCA is constantly working to protect and strengthen the chiropractic profession in Washington State.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned in your career? Practice has taught me to be a better person, striving to be nonjudgmental, curious, accepting and respectful whenever possible with each patient encounter. Listening and learning from each patient has provided a lifelong education for my own professional development. The chiropractic profession has served me as I have served chiropractic care to my community.

What one piece of advice would you give to new DCs? Enthusiastic doctors attract enthusiastic patients! Pay attention to your mind set. Use therapeutic communication with purposeful messaging directed toward science, outcomes, goals and progress. Be a Leader and create a path/plan for patients to achieve their goals.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.

Just for fun, I have adjusted a panoply of animals from racehorses, potbelly pigs, a wallaby to lots of llamas. I have adjusted people all over the world including my Sherpa in Tibet on Mount Everest. Chiropractic has allowed me to witness miracles of healing, travel the world and serve my community for my lifetime. I am so thankful to have loved and lived through chiropractic!
