Richard Adler, Steven Anglés, Melissa Carter, Arthur Leritz, Elisabeth Ruff, Attorneys at Law
Sponsored by Adler Giersch Personal Injury Law
(C2) Friday 11:00am - 12:30 pm
Richard Adler, JD, is the founding principal and partner at Adler Giersch. He has been doing what he loves for more than 40 years of practice, since graduating from Georgetown Law. Injury law is second nature to him.
Part of his personal mission has been to bring a better standard of legal care to the Pacific Northwest; bridging deep legal and medical knowledge, rooted in great service and outstanding results. He’s brought together a talented team of attorneys, paralegals, and staff who are all fiercely committed to the same values and specialize in traumatic injuries like brain, spinal cord and more. Together, with their clients, they’ve become like a big, extended family, changing lives and even changing laws.
Steven Anglés, JD was in his teens when his family moved from Miami to a small town. What seemed like a seismic uprooting, as a kid, was small compared to his family fleeing Cuba in the ‘50s. They left their homes, jobs, and family to start over with a few, small suitcases and a whole lot of determination in a country where they didn’t speak the language or understand the system.
While in law school, he started working for the D.A. prosecuting criminals and protecting victims of domestic violence. He also began working at Progressive Insurance. His job was to represent the insured person, but at the end of the day, his boss was really the insurance corporation. Despite his track record of exceptional verdicts and well over a hundred cases that he took to trial, eventually he found myself at odds with his own company almost as often as he fought opposing council. He’d built up highly specialized knowledge of the industry but knew he couldn’t keep working there. He wanted to shift from defense work (tearing down other people’s cases) to personal injury work (building people’s cases). He made that transition when he joined Adler Giersch.
Today, after 24 years of practice, he is a partner at Adler Giersch and works with a team who shares his same values: honoring and supporting clients and the relentless pursuit of great results. Steven works across the Pacific Northwest, in Seattle and Bellevue and manages a dedicated office in Kent to serve the South Sound community.
Melissa Carter is an attorney and partner at Adler Giersch. She graduated from the University of Washington and attended law school at Suffolk University in 1999. Fired up to get into the courtroom, she accepted a job as trial counsel for a prestigious insurance defense firm, defending large cases involving catastrophic injury, wrongful death and insurance coverage disputes. It was one of the best ways to build up her courtroom experience, because they fought so many claims.
To succeed as an insurance attorney, she had to convince herself that every case she defended involved some level of fraud or exaggeration to justify her “win” for the insurance company (which always meant a loss to someone who was injured). Melissa saw firsthand how insurance rules are stacked against victims. Seeking inspiration and meaning in her work, she took all that experience and knowledge of how insurance companies work and switched sides. Almost instantly, Melissa knew she was home.
Arthur Leritz, JD grew up being told he had an overdeveloped sense of duty. It’s what led him to join the Navy right out of school and later, to become an attorney. He has been in practice since 1999 and is a partner at Adler Giersch.
After graduating from the University of Washington and Willamette University College of Law, he worked as counsel for an insurance defense firm. After a while, he realized the only thing he was “helping” was the company’s bottom line. Worse, he was hurting people by looking for ways to deny coverage, leaving them with no way to pay bills, get ongoing treatment or recover. While working for the insurance company, he had a case against a lawyer who was representing an injured person. Over the course of the case, Arthur watched him with his client. That person was Paul Giersch and after meeting him, he knew what he needed to do and where he needed to be.
