What chiropractic school did you graduate from? Palmer West, 1987.
What made you want to be a chiropractor? At age 20 I suffered a herniated lumbar spine disc due to dead lifting improperly. After two years
of failed medical intervention, my dad took me to a chiropractor, Dr. Joseph Dumovich from Sea Tac. He was the first and only doctor to properly diagnose me with a reason for my incredible pain. He referred me to an orthopedic surgeon who performed chymopapain injection in Canada, which relieved my sciatica immediately.
I was and still am grateful for Dr. Dumovich’s ability to locate my problem. I would return to him for regular chiropractic maintenance. He was the one who encouraged me to consider becoming a chiropractor. He allowed me to shadow him in his practice. My motivation was and still is to help others with their chronic pain and other conditions to improve their lives through chiropractic care.
How has being a member of the WSCA helped you? I am grateful to the WSCA staff and organization for their persistence in representing our profession by working with legislators in our state to help us help our patients. Also, their sponsorship in CE courses is of the highest quality.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned in your career? To always show up to work with a joyful and positive attitude. Take care of your own health first so you can be an example to follow and offer encouragement to your patients.
What one piece of advice would you give to new DCs? It’s important to take a couple of years or so to either work with another experienced DC or, at least, spend time in their mentorship.
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself. After I earned my state licence in 1988, I worked as a vacation relief doctor. I then worked for two clinics as an associate. The experience I gained was invaluable and built my overall clinical and business confidence.
Over the years I have continued learning and became a CSCS, a chiropractic consultant and IME doc with the Dept. of L & I. I thank the WSCA for sponsoring these courses.
I attribute my success and happiness to my faith in God. Also, for my beautiful and supportive wife Elizabeth. She encouraged me to open my own practice and I truly couldn’t have done it without her and the support of her family. She worked two jobs as a nurse and put in endless hours of planning and working on the opening of our first clinic in Totem Lake.
If you’re not already a member of the WSCA, I strongly suggest that you do so. It is very affordable and will increase your ability to earn and learn to a much higher degree.
