algae are not excessively thick, applications can be made by inserting a backpack wand through the algae and applying product underneath the dense layer. If the algae are matting or too thick for the product to penetrate, then only the surface will be affected and it will never breakdown. So, how do we combat these situations and find another way of doing things? Let’s discuss subsurface applications.
Subsurface applications by boat offer an alternative option to a management program, and there are very few drawbacks associated with this type of treatment. Larger bodies of water or even smaller ones with boat access can benefit greatly from this approach. As the boat travels through the water, variable depth deployment lines trail off the back of the boat allowing for the product to be injected into the water column. Because product is being injected into the water, drift is no longer a worry. This system allows for optimal product placement and increased efficacy. As an added benefit, the boat also has a high pressure fire hose nozzle on deck to make surface applications for those hard to reach areas that can’t be treated from shore. Remember the thick matting algae that was too dense for the backpack? Not a problem! Algae is attacked either in the water column or taken out by the high pressure sprayer. Just keep in mind that whether treatment is by boat or shore, the experience of the applicator weighs heavily on the effectiveness of aquatic treatments.

Your association will want to look for a vendor that utilizes progressive and conservative aquatic management approaches, with a commitment to providing environmentally- friendly service programs.
How your water is being treated and with what techniques represent fundamental questions that should be asked, and consider the costs associated with these services. Treatment programs should have options, not only regarding the products being used, but how they are being used as well. Characteristics of the water body, weather, vegetation levels and treatment history are all important factors in determining the proper treatment technique. Einstein famously said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Far too many times, treatments are made over and over again with little to no results. So the next time you are considering a vegetation management plan for your community or property, remember there is more than just one way of treating something. Have the confidence to ask those questions and have that discussion with your provider.
